What I’ve always liked about the Peter Ash novels is that it never follows a set program. All good writers change up the formula book to book—Reacher always fluctuates between thrillers and mysteries, first and third person POV’s. But the thing Peter Ash has always done well is make the plot and fit the characters in, and not try to come have the plot change to accommodate the characters.
Some novels have incorporated sci-fi and future tech elements, flung Peter to Iceland for the whole book, and even dealt with a more traditional murder in the heartland kind of the book. It really lends itself to genuine surprises as to what the next book will be about.
It’s the same with this book. I was unprepared for a traditional thriller but this time focused on Peter’s partner-in-crime, Lewis. It felt like a page out of Reacher’s Bad Luck and Trouble, taking a notorious lone wolf like Peter but making it a team-up book. Granted, he always works with the same small crew of Lewis and June. But it usually comes back to Peter working on his own for extended parts of the book.
This felt like a team-up book. This felt like Peter would not be going rogue like he always does. And I kind of like that. It gives a different side to a character who usually gets flustered in company and shows how far he’s come. Not only that but it reveals a whole bunch about Lewis and his past that we never knew we needed.
I loved it. All of it.
