Heavy Hour is the second book in the series featuring Salem Reid, who runs a security/limousine business in Atlanta. But it is not necessary to read the first book, Varied Traits, prior to reading this. The books work well as stand-alone novels.
Salem is this all-round good guy who likes to help his friends, and as a result, gets pulled into some rather harrowing quests. In Heavy Hour, he investigates the death of a successful businessman merely hours after his wedding. The investigation reveals links to sexual abuse of minors and pornography.
The book contains some very explicit and graphic scenes of sex and violence.
Salem solves cases in his own way without police involvement. It's kind of more about getting even than getting justice. I didn't have an issue with that. What I found more problematic was that this guy doesn't put a foot wrong, ever. He is just too good and too decent and on top of that, he only ever seems to speaks when absolutely necessary. Therefore, I found him pretty dull.
I also thought the book could have been condensed. It felt very tempting to skim some paragraphs like driving directions, hygiene and/or daily routines that had little to do with the actual plot.
The plot relating to the murder itself was actually really good and quite gripping, but there was too much additional padding that slowed it down for me.
I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
