Found this slightly confusing to begin with. The satirical twist was its redeeming quality

Short graphic novel has some great lines. Like when our heroine tells the faceless slaves that she will bring them their brides, and one of them asks her "to throw in a side order of those little bread-roll things."

*cries* I hate giving such a low rating to one of my all-time favourite authors but Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire just wasn't my cup of tea.

I have read the original story in Fragile Things (a wonderful collection of short stories by Gaiman) but couldn't really remember what it was about (I now know why - because I didn't really like it). :/

This story is a satirical take on the Gothic genre and details how a writer who already lives in a fantastical world laughs at the suggestion of writing fantasy since he believes non-fiction is what the world craves and sets out to write a piece of "classic" literature. To me, this whole idea seemed ridiculously drawn-out and definitely not a basis for the publication of a graphic novel! I have to agree with some of the comments on here regarding turning Gaiman's work into graphic novels. I'm going to be honest: in all of his short story collections, there are some very poor and uninteresting reads, and yet, they still get turned into a graphic novel! Unfortunately, this story is one of the poor ones. I have read and loved How to Talk to Girls at Parties and Troll Bridge - both of these possessing stronger and interesting story lines with some beautifully stunning artwork.

I'm also not a fan of the artwork; in many of the panels, it's very hard to discern what the hell is happening which is a big turn-off for me. I understand it's set in a fantastical/Gothic world where drawings will be more spidery but this artwork just looks messy :(

I'm hoping his publishers will choose a far better short story next time to revamp in the graphic novel medium because there are some classic ones they have so far overlooked, and if this was an introduction into Gaiman's world, I can see it putting the vast majority of readers off his work.
