This one was solid, it's a bit darker than the episode they based off it. It's funny because I'm reading through the lens of having seen the show and I just keep waiting
for there to be some sexual tension between Det. Ins. Robinson and Phryne! Surely that wasn't a complete invention of the show?? I'd be so disappointed. But then it's quite a slow burn in the show so it might be a slow burn in the books as well.
Guess we'll see!

Phryne remains delightful, but for someone who doesn't care for children, she adopted quite easily, didn't she. And 'bitch' was thrown around surprisingly casually by several characters, not just the ones you might anticipate it from, which I always find offputting.

The mystery started promising but it was really slow going and I lost interest

I quite liked Ms. Fisher’s third adventure, despite it including some rather disturbing themes such as rape, child abuse and human trafficking. I have seen this episode before reading this book, it’s not exactly the same and so it was not completely spoiled to me. The books seem to follow the same overall patterns, and include rather identical descriptions of Phryne getting dressed, Phryne taking an expensive scented bath, Phryne driving her beloved car, Phryne having s*x with some handsome young man (I’m pleased to say that at least it wasn’t the fiancé this time), Phryne taking Dr. MacMillan/Dot/Klara out for a drink/lunch/shopping trip, consulting Bert and Cec/Jack❤️/Dr. MacMillan/Klara,.. and so on, and so on.

I loved getting to meet Jane, Ruth and sweet little Ember, and of course every mention of ✨Jack✨ makes me ever so happy. I intended this book to eventually make me decide if I would continue reading this series (as numerous reviews make it very clear others before me have decided not to), and for now I shall. I’ll probably not read the entire series back-to-back (it’s not Outlander or Bridgerton, if you’d ask me), but I’m curious what Ms. Fisher and her friends have further in store for me/us!
