Actually I would rate it a 3.75. If you are hoping to read about live dinosaurs in this book you will be disappointed. This is about old dinosaur bones, the wild west and some famous characters. This is more of a western than anything else and that is not a favorite genre for me so my opinion is not as strong as it normally would be but I do love Michael Crichton writing.

Good enough to finish I guess. Not sure what i expected from a western by a science fiction author that was released posthumously but im very whelmed. Corny as shit and often reads like a fanfic. Entertaining i guess

While I enjoyed this, it was a bit of a slog at times, and some of the added tension was monotonous and frustrating. I'm a fan of Crichton's work, even when he falls into info-dumping, particularly as a method to slow pacing before a climax. But as this was published posthumously, I can see where more editing and polishing was needed, and more potential routes were lost.

The fact this was published from his old notes and research, shelved long before his death, irks me a little. I may be wrong, but that surely suggests he no longer intended publication.

That aside, I'm pleased to have gotten the chance to read it, and have found myself sad when I turned the last page, and keen to learn more about the bone wars (a truly intriguing era of palaeontological history), particularly from Sternberg's writing.
