Well, I’m finally done with this ridiculous series. At least everything sort of came together here, and even though it’s 800 pages, there’s on average 3 lines per page. I admit I was impressed by the apt but kind of random quote from ונתנה תוקף.

I didn’t want to finish this book, because I knew I would have to say goodbye to some of the best characters I have ever read. I’m so sad there isn’t going to be more of this series, but wow am I truly so glad I have these books to come back to. Danielewski is a true artist and I can’t wait to read more of his works.

Redwood is a stellar conclusion to the first season of The Familiar. No experimental author of our time -- possibly ever -- knows how to tie up loose ends better than Danielewski. Like a slingshot, the first four volumes of the Familiar held us captive in growing tension, Volume 5 acting as the release of the Nightmare Stone into the wild. So many questions are answered in Redwood, and so many more are opened. It is enlightening, frightening, and also heartbreaking. But it fills my heart with joy to know that Danielewski's Redwood from so long ago, has found its place in the Familiar. I know Volume 5 will keep me up many nights, wondering how the characters I've come to love so much, are faring. while I wait for Season 2.

Incredible! Truly like nothing I've ever read before, this series captivated me from the first page.

I absolutely DEVOURED this volume.

It went by so so fast and that ending was absolutely phenomenal.

I am so very sad this series has been pretty much all but confirmed cancelled at this point as I would have been more than willing to read all 27 volumes.

I am hoping one day that this story can be told through whatever medium can best convey it, either through novels, graphic novels, a web series, a TV series, anything.

As I mentioned in my Vol 4 review, this series is definitely one that I will keep revisiting for the rest of my life. There is so much to pick over throughout all 5 volumes.

It has taken me about 8 months in total with breaks in between to read all 5 volumes. And in that length of time these characters have really stick with me.

It is with a heavy heart that I let this series rest on my shelves for a while, but I will one day, with no doubt, return and re-read this series.

Thank you, "The Familiar" for becoming my Familiar in these past 8 months of my life.

Shame that the planned 25-part series is apparently off the cards. This is the best of the five, and everything is just starting to pull together

Closing up the first season of this series, the fifth volume is a change of pace from the previous instalments. Almost everything in this book happens extremely slowly and told from multiple perspectives, or it is retold as something that has already happened.
There are also significantly more pages with mostly air. I don't know if parts have been cut, or if it was planned this way, but it makes this volume a bit light on substance.
Otherwise it furthers the plot and mysteries as it should. I'm looking forward to reading more.

This may be a "tv series in book form", but I didn't binge. Instead, I savored this installment, taking the time to try to understand Jingjing, to sit with each blank space a little. The story is coming together in such a beautiful way -- I can't wait until the next 'season' to see where MZD takes this.
