I really couldn't get into this one. It's very obvious that a certain someone they've been reunited with has ulterior motives and I got bored. Will try again at some point.

I'd say that I enjoyed this one even more than the first in the trilogy. The characters are more fleshed out by now and the threat was greater and more intense. The second half was especially hard to put down.

This book was a little harder to get into then the first one, but once i got into it I was hard to put down. I enjoyed the development of the characters and their relationships with Gemma, some good some bad. I like the way that everyone had to make choices with no right or wrong that led them to their next step, a realization or their destinies. I can not wait to read the last one and figure out which boy gets Gemma's heart if it is even one of them. What happens to the power and the creatures/people involved and what happen to the four friends.

I cannot believe this trilogy isn't rated 5 stars, it changed my LIFE. I don't even remember the first time I've read it or how many times since. Libba Bray seriously was gifted by the gods for this saga, and at the time, I don't think there was anything else like it. In fact, I still haven't found another author that gave me the warm, urgent, panicked, chilled, fierce, and melancholy feelings at all once that the Gemma Doyle series gave me. I'm also not big on period pieces, but Bray's description of 19th century England and all of the etiquette and comforts involved, it felt like I had been drifted away, homesick for a time I'd never even lived in. The connection that Bray builds between her characters and her readers is just amazing, and years later, I still feel pity and pride for the fictional girls. This book seriously swept me up, wrapped me in colorful Indian scarves, threw me into the torrential downpour of old England, pushed me through a portal into another magical realm, and sent me home knowing that it was, in fact, NOT a dream. I would pay huge money to read this series again for the first time.

3.75ish stars

I enjoyed the storyline of Rebel Angels more than I did for A Great and Terrible Beauty, but like its predecessor, I both liked and disliked this book.

The story itself seemed to have less dead zones than the first book did, and it kept a better pace….kind of.. Gemma knows she needs to find the temple and bind the magic, but doesn’t really put much effort into actually going and trying to do that. But we do get to see a lot of what life was like for young ladies in that time period – balls and operas and courting boys. I did end up guessing the plot twist at the end way before it happened, so I didn’t enjoy the shock factor there. It was just alright I suppose. I don’t see how anyone couldn’t see that coming a mile away.

The girls are all still selfish and rude, especially to each other, so I don’t see how they can claim they love each other. Felicity fat shames Ann, they constantly comment on how she’s not beautiful or pretty or worth anything…but get mad at her when she is down on herself? Hello? Y’all are down on her all the time, where do you think she learns it from??? Felicity still blames Gemma for the death of Pippa when it was really out of Gemma’s control. If she didn’t get the other girls out, they’d all be dead. So she can’t win with any decision there. There is no character growth from any of them except Gemma who, while being appropriately naive on certain things, really comes into her own by the end of the book.

Did I love this book? No. Do I love the characters? Also no. Am I going to read the last book anyway to see how it all ends? Why yes I am.

My all time favorite of the Gemma Doyle series. It not only keeps you turning the pages but the twists all through out and the history packed inside every tiny tidbit is simply amazing

Good as a sequel! Not going where I thought it would though but I still read the third one with good hopes in mind. It isn't as good as the first though.
