(3.5/5) I thought the premise of this was really interesting and I’m curious where all the threads go but also it wasn’t my absolute favourite. The world and characters didn’t feel as fleshed out as I’d like. That being said I’m definitely interested in picking up the second volume when it comes out!

The Croaking is a queer themed graphic novel about half human / half birds in a military academy. Scra is a crow and Ky is an imperial eagle. They actually met the Summer before they went to the academy and bonded over sunsets in the valley. But as Ky finds out that Scra is actually his roommate, he pretends to have never met him before. So that whole Summer meant nothing? It sure did to Ky.

What follows next is a story about an academy wrapped in secrets. Racism in the form of what type of bird you are, the crows being the supposed baddies. And a secret thing called The Croaking. I found the chemistry between the two a bit unbelievable to be honest. Ky is all up in his feels and Scra is as stiff and cold as that icecream that i left in my freezer two Summers ago. Oh and everyone is slim and has sixpacks. Everyone is conventionally attractive.

It's also a bit of your typical high school drama with some archetypes present. But the geeks and the weirdos are missing. Regardless the whole military academy setting is interesting. And the story really grew on me too as it offers something mysterious. Especially near the ending of the first volume the excitement picked up. So i will be reading the second volume.

Ongoing Webtoons comic.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Keep in mind that my rating isn't exclusive to volume 1.

The Croaking is a webcomic I started reading back in 2019 and quickly became a favorite. I think this goes without saying but the art style is amazing (I say this all the time but like most web comics it changes and gets better as the story progresses). The plot is super interesting and mysterious and as the story progresses you delve into more of the characters backgrounds, not just the main protagonists. I'm at the point where my favorite relationship dynamic, aside from Scra and Ky, is between a certain crow and you know who. The socio-political dynamics are becoming even more intense and I'm just amazed at how large the world of The Croaking has become.

I love this comic so much that I actually participated in my first ever Kickstarter campaign the creator set up, and I'm so pleased with the beautiful hardcover volume 1 edition I now own, along with bookmarks and a poster. Hopefully, The Croaking will be in stores someday.
