Dan Andersson is a very well known Swedish author. He died relatively young but his books and, in particular, his songs/poems/lyrics have made his name famous. To my surprise this book has never been translated to English! It consists of a number of short stories focusing on the lives of people living in the deep forests of Sweden. Their way of life focused completely on logging forest and converting the lumber to coal in huge mounds in a process that took several days. They prepared, maintained and guarded the process. They were all men living under very poor circumstances in small huts deep in the forests throughout the year. It was mesmerizing to encounter these stories, the poverty and the hardship, while simultaneously being exposed to the amazing beauty of the stark north, its star-filled skies and the connection to nature and lives filled with simplicity. There was a strong emphasis on the supernatural, strange creatures and ghosts. It was enchanting.
