Overall the story plot and details are quite interesting. However, I felt that there was no excitement somehow. Just plain old fashion of explanation on details at moments. Just my opinion...

Good space opera! Lots of action, enigmatic aliens, giant FTL ships, Earth hanging in the balance. What's not to love. I hope the next in the series is as good.

In the list where I first got to know of this book, it was billed as a book that any fan of the Battlestar Galactica TV series would enjoy. Of course, after that I was always going to read it.

Having done so, I can understand where that analogy comes from. It is a book where humanity is under attack from a strong and remorseless enemy; where the stories of the individuals matter as much as the grander narrative. But this is a great read for more than that. There is no information dump and the reader is allowed to discover more of the story as he gets into it. It is all very cleverly done; all very well thought out.

Not all is up to the same quality. There are characters who are not as solid, where things happen to them that feel off. But in general the story is excellently executed, the science stacks up and the aliens are truly alien, not caricatures.

This review will be for the complete first three book arc of this series. This novel reminded me a lot of the Jack Campbell Lost Fleet series as there was lots of space battles with ship to ship action. In this series, humans are fighting multiple alien species and not other human groups and for the most part are behind them technologically but the author makes up for this in the tenaciousness of the human fighting spirit. The author also does a pretty good job in fleshing out the multiple main characters and well as building a nice universe to tell the tale in.

I really enjoyed this whole series and look forward to reading more in the followup series. 4 stars for a fun read. Recommended for any fan of space navy military sci-fi.

I enjoyed this quite a bit but I wish it had been structured differently. The first third of the book is taken up with an epic space battle, and it's only after the battle is over that we get back story on any of the characters, the war, and the aliens. The second half of the book was way more interesting than the first.
