Not as good as milk fed, but Broder’s writing is captivating as usual.

Melissa Broder’s voice is definitely not for everyone, but it is definitely for me. She seamlessly blurs the line between reality and fantasy, or maybe delusion. The female protagonist is incredibly unlikeable, yet simultaneously incredibly relatable. As the story veers into the absurd, she is able to explore the human experience and emotion from such a raw place. No, I have never been in a relationship with a merman, but I have grappled with codependency, insecurity, and losing my identity in toxic relationships. I think the exploration of these basic human experiences is more accessible because it is told from the perspective of the absurd and delusional.

I have noticed the trend in reviews from all three of her novels of an aversion to how sex and bodies are described. While, I completely agree that there are descriptions that are stomach churning, I personally appreciate the realness of it. Sex and bodies, and bodily fluids, are kind of gross, but they are a part of life and intimacy that we try to ignore, probably in part from a place of shame, which we see Lucy struggling with this shame. I find her inclusion and acceptance of this refreshing and more accurate to reality than the perfect, sanitized portrayal of sex and intimacy found in most of literature, TV, and film.

Afraid to say that this one was rough for me. I love and adore her so so much but this story didn’t do it for me. I’m so annoyed but she’s still fantastic.

I love Melissa Broder and will continue to read/buy anything she puts out. However, I am extremely hit or miss when it comes to smut in books and unfortunately this one is just not working for me.

I downloaded this ebook because booktok was tagging this a fish/mermaid-sex. This book is so much more than that. This is not meant to be a light read. This books deals with depression, self harm, low self esteem, toxic relationships and addiction. The internal monologues of the protagonist is lengthy and talks in great depth on each of the subjects, a lot of self reflections and slowly breaking from harmful patterns. The conflict is presented naturally: and the climb is slow. Do not pick this book if are looking for smut

Darkly, darkly funny. This book is good, and the humour and delivery felt very fresh/contemporary to me. It's incredible that Broder can weave in so many tones and dark themes and jokes into one tight package. I laughed out loud multiple times, but reader beware that some topics won't be for everyone.  I knew very little and found the plot quite surprising, depressing and silly!
