I love Melissa Broder and will continue to read/buy anything she puts out. However, I am extremely hit or miss when it comes to smut in books and unfortunately this one is just not working for me.

I'm very middle-of-the-road with this one. I think the marketing screwed it over somewhat, in that it advertises a romance with a woman in the middle of a bad breakup and mental shutdown, who gets into a relationship with a merman. Sounds like a good time. What we got is a selfish, nihilistic woman crashing at her sister's, shitting the women in her therapy group, and hating herself when she's not fucking the merman. It's a very explicit book, detailing everything about sex whether it's appealing or not. The main character is an asshole with a lot of mental health issues. You are watching from her perspective as she is actively ruining her life and those around her, right up to the end. It is meant to be uncomfortable. It is well written, just not for me.

If “Well, well, well if it isn’t the consequences of my actions” was a book. My mentality going into this definitely has influence on my review. The synopsis for this book made it sound like going into a whimsical fantasy romance, and the downward spiral of the FMC is anything but. Do I get it, yes. Is it what I expected and wanted at this time? No. It’s a sad journey with a woman’s addiction to Love and her terrible sexual encounters. Some major warnings/spoilers:
the doggo dies from tranquilizer OD/neglect
menstrual cunnilingus, anal sex,
she digs a turd from her ass while cleaning herself for potential anal, it’s a small chapter dedicated to this
. Some moments also felt like the FMC was trying to be so deep, but it just felt so forced and fake to me, and maybe that was the point? Who knows.

started getting more and more furious as it became evident that
the dog was going to die...
Lucy is by far the most unlikable protagonist I've ever read. I think that was the point, but it was still grating that she never seemed to learn from any of her mistakes. I wish she
drowned
at the end

The main character, Lucy, had been suffering from depression after breaking up with her long time partner. So her sister offered her to housesit and look after her diabetic dog, Dominic, while she and her husband were away. And it was there in the waters of Venice Beach did she meet a charming merman, Theo, whom she shared a passionate love affair with.

I am for main characters who are flawed and who eventually develop as the story progresses. But this woman was the most annoying, narcissistic, needy, selfish character I've ever read. And I was beyond annoyed. I, in fact, abhor her which I will explain in a bit. If this is the author's objective, well, she did a phenomenal job in making my blood boil. I thought this book would be the kind of weird like Sayaka Murata's Earthlings which apparently is not. And the ending? Wait, should I like the MC because she just had a what the book may seem to claim as a big realization?

‼️SPOILER‼️
And why do I abhor her? Whenever she and Theo had s*x in her sister's house, the dog would bark at Theo angrily which scared the merman. So in order for them to have a peace and quiet intimate moment, Lucy injected the dog with tranquilizers. And this happened several times. Which, of course, caused the death of the poor dog. And I didn't buy her regret towards the end. 🤬
‼️END OF SPOILER‼️
