The best history book I’ve read. Captures the “haunted, vibrant city of absences” from multiple angles through a collage of individual stories.

So good, such an innovative way to approach a city... one of the few books I would actually read on location.

This book is really cleverly written - from so many different perspectives and from across literally centuries of time to tell the story of Berlin through the ages.

I did find myself getting more interested in some characters than others though, which I guess would be the case for most people, and would say that that’s the only real drawback of this book.

The writing is difficult to read. The prose tries too hard to be clever. Only made it through 2 chapters
