This was a very solid dark academia thriller. Despite many books currently being marketed in this genre and falling short, this one actually checks that box. Although the author nailed the vibe there were a lot of sections where the dialogue really feel short. A lot of it felt not believable and in need or way stronger editing. The plot was overall solid but not as strong as the atmospheric development. There was a number of plot points that strained belief - including the main characters lack of questioning at various points. Overall enjoyed and will definitely look forward to what this author does next.

I really wanted to like this book. The premise was interesting and I dove into it thinking I would absolutely love it. I enjoyed the settings for the book as the main character moved among Scotland, Italy, and France; some of the history of what she was researching was interesting, as well. However, I felt like there were too many plot points moving within the story, rather than a few things going on and being done well, there were multiple plot points that were only ok. I found the main character a bit insufferable and was basically yelling at her from the beginning about bad decisions I knew she was going to make. I think we were also given a back story for her that wasn't really entirely necessary and instead I just saw her making the same mistakes over again. I saw some of the "twists" coming and as someone who usually can't guess what will happen, that was a bit disappointing.
