Based on length and cover, I hoped this book would be a swashbuckling palate-cleanser. Unfortunately, I found the action as flat as the shapes. Nothing surprised me. Nothing excited me. Nothing amused me. Nothing moved me.
Nevertheless, this book, unlike any of the dozen others I had checked out at the same time, got requested back by another library patron. I hope they enjoy the adventure more than I did!

These Jason reviews from me must look real biased but I promise he’s just this good. I have two more Jason books to read before I finish all his translated work. Feels very bittersweet.

This was a very interesting read considering it’s the only time Jason has had a writer work with him. I didn’t know what to expect going into this one, part of me thought I’d end up seeing a Jason stray away from his signature storytelling style. That’s not what we get here. If Vehlman wrote out an entire script for Jason I imagine he’s a huge fan because this book feels so very Jason. In some ways, it’s the ultimate Jason book. It has most of his tropes in one story with a little extra spice.

It wasn't mindblowing, and I haven't read any other work by the author, but this book was ODD. It was odd in a simple way. The story was simple, the characters were kind of kinky, and it was just on another level of disturbing. I finished it in less than 20 minutes, and for those less than 20 minutes, I was actually enjoying myself. Such a ruthless story inside such simple drawings.

This has been my favorite of the Jason books because there's this careful sense of sad whimsy that I found pretty enchanting, especially compared to the other books which felt pretty one note.
