I liked the book enough but I cannot recommend the audio version. The narrator is recoding it in his home and between the 2 packs a day voice and the lip smacking it's not really worth listening to.
Also with pulp you need to be able to skip some sections, you're not reading Shakespeare here and skipping let's you put the action more at your own pace.
I switched from the audio book to the e-book at the 75% mark and I wish I'd done it sooner. I really enjoyed the end of the book and look forward to the next in the series.
The book actually reminded me of another book, Cut and Run, it's almost the same exact story, but this one is written for gay men and I liked it more.

I have no idea where to even begin. I don’t want to be very disrespectful since the author is no longer with us, but damn! This was a nightmare to finish. A half star for me. The cop aspect was ridiculous. There was no real police work and you do not just go from beat cop to homicide detective overnight. Doesn’t matter if you’re gay or not. Can we please address the word “queer” every other sentence. I rolled my eyes with this book more than any other I’ve read. The dynamics between the two characters was virtually nonexistent. There was no real banter and I’m sorry but you will not fall in love with your STRAIGHT partner in 2 days. Not going to happen. Period. I will not be reading book 2. I don’t care about any of these characters or what happens to them.

-I ended up liking it more than i thought i would.

-The story and the writing is weirdly entertaining.

-Straight macho Cop and Out and proud Gay Cop pairing was definitely interesting. Tom and Stanley's partnership was filled with hilarious moments. I liked them a lot.

-I didn't believe in their relationship, kinda came out of nowhere but it didn't bother me at all.

-The case was interesting and the perp, lawd! what a fucked up situation. The investigation process was questionable though.

- We got Drag Queens. Yay!

Overall, it was hilarious and enjoyable.

We meet Tom and Stanley, both cops. Tom is straight, Stanley gay. Although Tom objects (of course!) they get partnered up for a homicide case. Together they need to find a serial killer; a drag queen.

Although I enjoyed the book, and will definitely read the next one of the series I did have some issues. Tom, the "I'm definitely straight, because I'm telling you I am", cop seems inconsistent, and not in a 'usual' conflicted way. It gave me a bit of an okay? moment and made me stop for a bit. And whilst I loved Stanley ("don't ever call me Stan"), a real flaming gay, I really can't understand how he EVER made it through the preliminaries to join the police force, let alone the training etc!

Funny & sad. I found the policing lacking credibility but the drag scene felt genuine to me. I loved both Stanley and Tom and I'm starting Deadly Wrong right away.

Gay cop, straight cop?

Could have been so funny.

I was kind of daunted after reading the back of the book, but then I tackled the story anyway (also since it was a book of the month). It turned out not only to be interesting, but I also learned a whole lot of new things about the underground world of drag queens.

But it wasn't just the story line. The romance spiking between two cops was pretty interesting too! It touched upon reality, and didn't just seem like silly fiction; I actually felt these could be true events taking place in San Francisco at any time. And what more do you really want from a romantic fiction novel? I know I don't want for much more.

The characters were fairly one-dimensional and not believable as police detectives. The who-dunnit was too straight forward and simple.
Both main characters were walking cliches. Especially the straight cop in this dynamic duo was portrayed as so simple and uneducated, that I wonder how he ever made detective.
Someone looking for a proper cop story should stay away from this. But if you are looking for a little light reading with some not very deep romance thrown in, it'll be fine. Take it with you to the beach!
