Great conclusion to the series!

I'm definitely going to recommend this to people looking for fast paced hard Sci-Fi.

Favorite quote:
  • "That's the difference between good military commanders and good politicians, John Geary. You've shown me that a good military commander spends the lives of their people reluctantly and with regret, but does spend them when necessary. The good politician does the same thing with principles. There aren't any fine burials for principles though."

This is the sixth and final book in the Lost Fleet military series, a series that I've gobbled up in under three weeks. I enjoyed the series very much, partly for its excellent space battles, and partly because I was in the mood for a hero that I could root for in an uncomplicated way. The hero of the series, John Geary, is unambiguously good and is put in a succession of difficult situations that held my attention well. The reservations that I expressed in my review of book four still hold, and I could add a couple more to the list. Indeed, part of me wants to add more, because I think many people I respect would rate this series poorly. Part of me wants to appear cleverer and more sophisticated than I am. Yes, I like many books that are more demanding and more nuanced than the Lost Fleet series. But I admit it: I like this too.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

Loved the ending but was a bit different to the other stories. Solid not sure if I like that style more or less yet. Interesting though.

A terrific resolution to the series. This is one series I was disappointed to finish because now I don't have another book to look forward to anymore. I've been looking forward to moving on to the next book for awhile now, and it's been very pleasurable.

This resolution is almost perfect, in my opinion. I was very happy with the way he brought everything together, although to tie up all the loose ends in one book things had to move from one to the next very quickly, and it seemed a bit forced, but not a big deal. The main character's relationship with his romantic interest is handled very tastefully and honorably, and I was very happy with the way the author had that turn out.

I made it to the "end" of the Lost Fleet series!

This book covers the conclusion of the Syndic/Alliance war and, of course, the beginning of the Enigmatic War. The story here, particularly the first half, shows the flashes of brilliance that kept me coming back over the course of six books. There are some great moments as the fleet returns to grapple with the Syndics and a plot twist that I genuinely didn't see coming, but once that little story arc comes to a close it kind of feels like the rest of the book was dedicated to wrapping everything up in a neat parcel despite that fact that it lays the groundwork for [b:Dreadnaught|9676849|Dreadnaught (The Lost Fleet Beyond the Frontier, #1)|Jack Campbell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1404421694s/9676849.jpg|14564728] and the rest of the Beyond the Frontier series.

I think that Mr Campbell's best work with regard to this series' characters is in this book. The Rione/Desjani adolescent sniping goes away and both characters manage to do some reasonably interesting evolving (although the love story really takes a hard turn into some rather trite dialogue - at least we don't have to deal with any more explanations regarding the impossibility of Geary and Desjani talk lest their respective honours be forever tarnished).

Overall, Victorious was OK. Not a glowing endorsement exactly but there you go. I'll not be carrying on with the next two series because, honestly, I just don't care about the characters at all. The Lost Fleet story was just "OK", it wasn't compelling. I think it could have been in two or three books rather than the six it ended up in.
