Can you claim a knitting book as a book read for GR. Well in the case of Kate Davies, among other knitting designers (eg. Elizabeth Zimmermann) the answer is yes. This book is a book of essays (13 in all), stunning photographs, and knitting designs (14 patterns). While you might expect the essays to focus on the history of textiles and wool, Davies' essays are on history, geography, and science and technology ( the most surprising and delightful to me). The essays all focus on the West Highland Way and topics include Rob Roy, the building of a series of aquaducts and pipelines to bring clean water to Glasgow in the mid 19th century, and "the Electric Village", where aluminum was produced in the late 19th century in the Highlands. Kate Davies' is a gifted writer in sharing stories of unknown and forgotten histories.

Davies left academia after serious health problems brought on by the stress of the work. She began writing about the history of textiles and knitting, and designing knitting patterns. Kate Davies Designs was awarded the UK Microbusiness of the Year. She serves as a model for small businesses, and all those who want their work to be something they love. She lives right off the West Highland Way, and her love for the area shines in this book.
