 Night’s Darkest Embrace

I Picked Up This Book Because: Had to catch up.

Media Type: Audiobook
Source: BC Public Library
Dates Read: 5/23/24
Rating: 4 Stars
Narrator(s): Tavia Gilbert

The Story:
This was the only book by Ms. Frost I hadn't read so of course I had to fix that. This was a great adventure with a side of sexiness. I would have liked to see more from this world.

I enjoyed this- the world was built well (especially for a novella) and the story itself felt complete. I liked Mara and Raphael.

Although this isn't a Cat & Bones story nor one of its spin-offs it is a terrific read. In a short story Ms. Frost has created a rather complex world where there are mixed bloods or partial demons, purebloods, and fallen angels. All of these beings can traverse between some realms some more than others. When partial Mara was 15 she and her cousin Gloria went to Nocturna realm where they were abducted as food for purebloods. Mara was rescued but Gloria wasn't so lucky and now Mara is determined to hunt down her killer. She is attracted to Raphael the leader of Nocturna but he is keeping secrets so she doesn't trust him. Will he help her or hurt her in her hunt?
A short but wild ride. I’d love to visit this world again sometime when we can spend time there.

I love Jeaniene Frost because she's able to create such strong female leads in each of the books she writes. Whether they are a full length story or a novella, she managed to capture their strength of character as well as their need to ensure that good always wins at the end of the day.

With NIGHT'S DARK EMBRACE, Mara is no different. She's determined to avenge the death of the cousin, Gloria, at the hands of a Pureblood (pureblooded demon). To do that, she's willing to go into the realm of Nocturna and try to find the Pureblood that will be forever etched in her memory. But there is also another man that's etched into her memory and that's the Nocturna kingdom ruler, Rafael. She's not sure what to make of Rafael, is he friend or foe, but she knows she's attracted to him. Her only hope is her gut feelings when it comes to Rafael are true while she finally brings her cousin's killer to justice.

I loved Mara. Like Cat or Lena, she wants good to prevail and will do what she needs to in order to ensure that happening. She's willing to drug the man that she's hopelessly attracted to in order to try and undercover just which side he was on.

My only wish for this one was that it was longer. I did want some more development in the romance between Mara and Rafael. I know you can only do so much in a novel, but I did want more.

A fun, quick read if you're going through Jeaniene Frost withdrawals.

Second reread as audiobook 3/17/2023

Another audiobook.  Same narrator as the last Frost novella.  Her narration is just perfect for these books.

Wow.  I was super in love with this one. Hot and steam but also super sweet.  I like steamy but at the end of the day I'd rather have heart melting sweetness.

I hope Frost writes some more in this world.  I'm a sucker for demons and fallen angels. The only thing that could have made this better was if it was a full length novel or part of a series.  The couple definitely made me think of Cat & Bones, but since I love them a lot that is not a bad thing!

Geez I love Jeaniene Frost.. I don't think anything she writes could be less than fabulous! Mara is a Partial, part human and part demon. The line up goes as follows: Fallen Angels who mate with humans make and feed off of --> Purebloods who mate with humans make and feed from --> Partials who mate with humans make more diluted Partials and they aren't required to feed from anyone. Only the Fallen look different, and only because of their wings. The other two look exactly the same. As a Partial she can see the gateway from our world to Nocturna, and is free to travel between the two worlds. Purebloods can travel both worlds and others that Partials have no access to. As a teenager Mara and her cousin Gloria finally found some hot Partials to show them the gateway to Nocturna that they were dying to see, but their parents had forbidden them from going to. The two guys ended up being Purebloods in disguise, and Gloria wasn't able to get away. Raphael the leader of the Partials in Nocturna saved Mara and told her not to return until she was no longer a teenager. Apparently Purebloods like the essence of children. Since the day she turned twenty she has come back to Nocturna looking for the Pureblood, Ashton, to avenge her cousin. She knows Raphael knows more than he is letting on, and even though she has been in love with him since she was a teenager, she plans to use their chemistry to get the information she has been searching for.

***Spoilers***
Mara convinces Raphael to take him back to his home for a little play time. He normally takes his women to a hotel, but he agrees to bring her there. Once they arrive, and in the process of a heated kiss she tranqs him, and searches his home to find out what connection he has with the Pures. She is convinced he is one of them, and believes that even more when she finds two portals in his bathroom. One leads to her world, and another leads to the realm that Partials have no access to. She tells one of her close friends, Jack, a partial guard hoping he will be able to spread the news about Raphael. What she doesn't expect is for Jack to reveal himself as a Pure when he turns her over to Ashton. Ashton takes her into the farther realm to feed from, but is interrupted by Raphael. Turns out that Raphael is not a Pureblood, but he is Fallen, his mother was a Fallen who mated with a Pureblood and he has kept his secret for hundreds of years. He kills Ashton, tells Mara that she is his mate and they make a plan to fix his reputation she messed up, and to get Jack talking so they can find the other Pures hiding among them. The don't want Raphael to reveal to anyone else he is Fallen, so instead she tells everyone that Rachel, a Fallen and Raphaels mother, caught and killed Ashton and brought her back with the promise of other Pures to feed from. Mara finds out from Jack who the two others are, and once she outs them the rest of the Partials take care of them. Their story ends with a HEA and I look forward to reading more!

Jeaniene Frost doesn't disappoint in this new novella about the realm of Nocturna - an world inhabited by Fallen angels, demons (purebloods), and half-breeds (or partials as they are called). Mara is a partial that lost her cousin to a pureblood attack and has returned to Nocturna to find him and kill him. While there she meets Raphael - an enigma with a mysterious past - and ruler of Nocturna. Mara and Raphael have quite a bit of heat between them, but a misunderstanding could ruin everything for both of them.

This was a very quick read. The story was fast paced and exciting with just enough of an air of mystery to make it almost impossible to put down. I hope Frost plans to write more about the world of Nocturna - I loved visiting.
