I remember having read this short story before but never knew of the author, one of those stories I’d randomly come across. Interesting take on what goes around comes back around

I really enjoyed this! A very interesting concept. Even when there are no characters to root for, you still keep reading until the end because the story keeps you wondering. I love how the story comes around full circle, too.

A short story that cleverly parallels a small village's discovery of an endless hole with how majority of the world's destruction of our environment. Themes of selfishness, greed, and negligence are heavily implied throughout this story, as the village uses this bottomless pit to their benefit in advancing their society. The last sentence left me thinking for awhile the many messages the author intended to tell. Great stuff.

My roommate recommended this author to me & I’m glad they did! Known as one of Japan's most influential science fiction writers of all time, Hoshi has published many short stories. I picked this one to start with. The hole in the story symbolizes the idea of “out of sight, out of mind” & the end hints at the consequences of thinking in this manner. Thought provoking, short & suspenseful, I can’t wait to read more from him!
