There's nothing original in this book, and still my heart wants to give it 5 stars. I'm conflicted.

The best way I can summarize this story is: The Witcher + Dragon Age + Bloodborne + Interview with the vampire + The Last of Us + The Fewlloship of the Ring + The Dark Hunter series = the plot and characters from this book. To a T. I mean, the DnD tropes are not subverted AT ALL.

If you've read any Sherrilyn Kenyon books in her Dark Hunter series, you've already met Gabriel. Damn, there's probably a Gabriel in her books too. If you've read The Stormlight Archive, you've probably met Ash already.

And still, I ate this book. I'm conflicted. Very much so. Because there is nothing original in it, but it just *works*.

I want to give this one a 4 stars but I cant look past all the SA and pedophilia. You could just leave out underage kids being turnt into vampire slaves? Like you literally wrote this yourself... There is something with Kristoff and underage characters :/

I absolutely soared through this book. It was a little corny and a little preachy at moments, but over all i had just so much fun with this book. Its strongest moments are absolutely in the second half between Gabe and Dior, and every moment left me on the edge of my seat wanting more. My main complaint is the treatment of
Astrid - she had such potential, but as soon as she becomes THE love interest her character is defanged and ends up falling to irrelevance
though I hope there is potential for that change in the next book. Regardless I'm excited to start the next book, and I can't wait to see more of these characters and this universe.

Kept seeing this book pop up as recommendation on a grimdark fb group and I finally bought it cause I found a special version with several illustrations in it.
And OMG what a perfect decision it was. I absolutely LOVED the story, the writing, EVERYTHING. I don't think I can quite put into words how much I enjoyed reading it.
Edit: re-read it before reading the 2nd book of the series and I can confirm that I still love it a lot
