I'd say this is more of a solid 3.5. I really enjoyed it, but it got pretty redundant at a point. It helped out a lot that I knew it was an adult fairy tale before going into it, but it still was a bit strange in the repetitive nature of her writing.

This book, while kind of strange, was pretty cool and original in how it explored the idea of beauty and its impact on people, their relationships, and the world. I liked the elements of magic realism that crept in throughout the book and also how there was a bit of a mystery going on as well. I struggle with my appearance on a daily basis, as do most women. This book really opened my eyes to the futility of that and how, no matter what you look like on the outside, you can still have an incredibly beautiful spirit. One of my favorite quotes that I was reminded of while reading this book is the following: “You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked ‘female’.” I highly recommend this book! A very creative and imaginative book unlike anything else I have ever read. Very refreshing to read something so original.

Weird novel, and has a fairly low rating here on Goodreads, but I enjoyed it for the humor. It's sort of an extended premise about a woman whose beauty ruins her life and her friend whose ugliness ruins her life. The beautiful woman wears extensive prosthetics to hide her beauty and the ugly woman tries to compose music that will trick people into viewing her as beautiful, based on her job composing music to play in stores to encourage shoppers to buy more.

Witty, and I enjoyed it. Has an extremely funny dinner party scene.

Strange, but somewhat satisfying.
