A great fourth installment in the story of the Hollywood Division. Certainly lighter fare than the third with bad guys who were simply stupid instead of stupid AND evil. If you liked NYPD Blue you'll love Wambaugh's story of the cops who work Hollywood.

All of the Hollywood novels follow the same format: there is one overarching crime storyline through the whole book, with dozens of little side stories of the cops and criminals in the Hollywood district. How much I like the book depends on the main story because all of the sideline tales throughout all four books have been equally hilarious, horrifying, and heartbreaking. The main story in this one, several hapless criminals attempting art fraud, was great. I don't think this series is showing any signs of getting stale. I'm looking forward to the next one!

I’ve enjoyed this series and while this one started a little on the slow side, Wambaugh brought it home nicely. This group of cops isn’t nearly his best, but they are good nonetheless. Wambaugh is simply one of the best. You can tell he’s slowing down a bit but he’ll always be one of, if not the, best cop writers around.

I received this book from the goodreads first read program.

This was my first Joseph Wambaugh book. To be honest with you, I didn't know what to think about it at first. I know that he is a very popular author, so I guess I went in with fairly high expectations.

In the end, after I got used to the language he used..which I found to be a bit stereotypical (I actually live in Southern California)..it was an alright book.

Ok--I'm going to be in the minority and I'm ok with that. Lots of things I liked about this novel: knowing Southern California references (In N Out, SAG card) , the surfer cops flotsam and jetsam, the familiarity with LAPD police procedure. What made me decide not to finish it: lots of gratuitous profanity. Sure, I know cops swear, but they defecate too and I don't need detailed accounts of either one. Also, sorry, but the reference to Oedipal sex didn't seem exotic, it just seemed weird. So--I'll get my LA police procedurals elsewhere.
