This has been my favorite volume so far! The dominoes are all set up, the team has been chosen, and now it's time to knock them all down in the next volume! I think Pacat's script writing got a little tighter here, too, and Johanna the Mad's art (which was already fantastic) has really hit its stride. I'm really excited to see what happens next now that all this setup is through and I'm even more interested in Sarah Rees Brennan's novel coming out later this month!

Hi, can someone point me to this school that's filled entirely with hot gay guys and fencing? Thanks!

I felt like this dragged. Yeah, there were cool events and matches. But I didn't connect with this. It wasn't interesting to me and didn't hold appeal. I don't know if it's just me or if it's the storytelling, but it's just not working.

This continues right after volume two. The matches between the boys are still going on, but with parents invited. The eliminations are still happening between everyone so we could see who makes the team.

The characters are okay. They are falling into typical cliches both in overall storytelling and sports stories. I dunno... Nothing is really standing out to me. They're cool and I like their look. That's about it.

The art style is what I pointed out in the last volume. Some of the angles aren't drawn with enough drama (thereby it's lacking the emotion it is going for) and some are proportionally incorrect.

I realized what made it look kind of off. It's two things; the facial features placement and the line thickness.
- The facial features are too high up on the face. I understand that they want a prominent jaw and chin, but it's too much of one.
- In the actual comic (not the covers), the line thickness is the same every time. I feel the art would be better if it did have the line thickness variety because it would then show what the line is trying to show better. What they have is good, I'm just being picky.

It is a fairly compelling story and the characters are pretty cool, so I can see why so many people enjoy it. If you enjoy sports and a very comic art style, you'll probably enjoy this.

Side note

The quote on the front of the cover is trying to be witty and prove how good the comic is, but it just really downgrades the positives about the series. Don't compare it to sports manga. This is its own work in its own genre. Let it prove itself.

Here's the quote:
"Fence proves western comics can do the sports genre as perfectly as any manga all-star, and it does so without breaking a sweat." - comicbook.com

I love and adore this series to no end — I have never ever seen western media do a sports story so well.
