This had such smart writing for a comic aimed at kids! The origin story was wrenching, and Van Lente does a solid job of pointing out Tony Stark's privilege while still making him a likable hero. Lots of Rhodey in this one, too -- the author reimagines him as COO of Stark International and mission control for the Iron Man, which is a take I really liked.

Oscillating between a 2 and 2.5 stars. I guess it'd be good for kids, but I found that it struggled to hold my attention.

This was a fun redo the Iron Man origin. It looks good and is self-contained.

Tune in to my special interview with author Fred Van Lente over on the All the Books Show. https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/off-the-books-interview-with-fred-van-lente

This is a cute little series. A little more emotional depth than the team book. The story of how Tony became Iron Man is different and it’s a little like Ults where Rhodey helps from behind the scenes. Each issue has a different villain so nothing drags out a lot. It’s surprisingly funny at times.

Tony’s a little bit less sensitive to who’s being harmed by his actions and his company’s actions. For example, this is the first version of Tony I’ve read that doesn’t treat his employees well. It’s odd. And it’s pre MCU so it isn’t like they were exaggerating what everyone thinks MCU Tony is like. It’s just a little odd.

But I like Tony and Rhodey’s relationship.

it was a nice and enjoyable book. it's just that the technology or the plans to save the day weren't that believable for me. and i know it's a comic book and all, but i often found myself asking: how did we get from that to this? why did that have to happen? wouldn't it have been simpler if....?

however, it does have its of moments of shine in the sun and the drawings are absolutely exquisite! if you're one of those people who enjoy the art work as well, not just the story arc, you're going to like the way the action is presented.

I'm not sure what to say about this title. It's pretty ridiculous. Enjoyable, but ridiculous.
