I picked up this book because I am absolutely in love with the movie Lost and Delirious, which is based on this book. The book is so different from the movie... they're both creepy, but this book just blew me away.

2.5 ⭐️ The 1/2 star was added because I love the movie so much. Lost and Delirious was one of my favorite movies as a teen and I still love it. The book, not so much. I knew going in that the story was very different from the movie, but this book was honestly boring. For being a short read, there was a lot of unnecessary content. I kept thinking while reading "what does this have to do with the story?"

Mouse Bradford, a mousy young girl of 10 is shipped off to a all-girls boarding school in western Canada in the late 60's. There she meets Paulie, her imaginative, refuses to play by the rules dorm roommate. Paulie has her own ideas of how to have fun, under the nose of authority, and her strong personality makes it difficult for Mouse to resist her influence. Paulie and Mouse's shenanigans escalate until one day Paulie crosses a terrible line.
The book has lots of short chapters, and it's told from observant Mouse's point of view. I mean, as a book about an all-girls boarding school, I should have expected some mention of alternative sexualities but I did not expect it to go in the direction it did.

The writing was good. The subject interesting. The plot was boring and long. I just could not finish it. DNF

Seriously can’t believe this is what Lost and Delirious is based on… The novel and film are so different from each other that I was shocked at every turn.  I found this funny and unsettling.  Many of the classic tropes of girls’ boarding school novels are in here and it’s interesting to see them through the lens of characters so filled with female misogyny and, as Mouse puts it, a disinterest in and lack of respect for women.
