“She glanced over as Summerset came to the doorway. She frowned over another bite of pizza. “We didn’t call the morgue, did we?”

“There’s some lightning with the rain, and with that steel rod up your ass, you’re a prime target.”

“Must you always go for the face?”
She smiled. “It’s so pretty I can’t resist.”

“It was a bet, and I lost the bet. Why do I get the money?”
“It’s your punishment.”

“With her scarf trailing behind her like a happy flag, the red tips of her hair glowing in the sunlight, Peabody strolled along College Walk. Eve refrained from pointing out that cheerful flag could be used to strangle her in hand-to-hand.”

“Then, since apparently we had a fight this morning, we need to make up.”
“I thought we already did.”
“You’re the one with the Marriage Rules.” He toasted her before he finished off the whiskey. “There must be a notation on makeup sex.”
“Maybe.”
“If not, write it down,” he advised”

“She shrugged. “I could write a book of sayings that should actually be sayings if people didn’t keep killing each other.”

“I’m a New York City police detective, and a New York City cop knows a lying sack when she sees one. So don’t think you’re going to sit there and insult my family, my vocation, or my lieutenant. You aren’t worthy to wipe the boots she’ll kick your ass with.”

“Since Eve figured she could have drop-kicked the dog a solid twenty yards through the goalposts, she just gave it a cool stare.
Peabody, in contrast, went into gooey mode.
“Oh, aren’t you cute? Aren’t you the cutest little thing? It’s okay, baby. What’s your name, baby?”
“If it tells you, I’ll strip naked and dance the hula right here.”

“He stepped back, blinked. “Well, look at you.”
“What?” Thrown off, Eve glanced down at herself.
“You look gorgeous.”
She’d have been less shocked if he’d stabbed her with his scalpel. “I— What?”

“I thought it was going to be a hole in the ground filled with water.”
“We wanted to do a bit better than that.”

“Think of the satisfaction as we watch it grow over the years, bloom every spring.”
“Think of the guilt when it dies because we killed it.”

“Darling? Spare a minute?”
She came back, her ’link pressed, screen down, to her chest. And hissed, “Don’t call me darling when I’m talking to cops.”
“Sorry, Lieutenant Darling.”

“Likely sleeping like a baby.”
“Babies are always crying.”
Roarke stopped on the way up the stairs with her. “That’s quite true, isn’t it? I’ll give you that one. He’s sleeping like a sociopath”

The 50th in death book. I’ve given up reading them in order because of library availability. I love this series but I’m surprised this was the 50th book? Seems like a run of the mill case instead of a landmark.

These have probably reached their limit with me. The characters are seeming more and more like cut outs rather than people.

Another great read from JD Robb in the In Death series. Eve Dallas walks into every homicide with an open mind but finding a beloved pediatrician dead by poisoning is leaving her stumped. Especially when a second person dies. Almost nothing connects the two but the hard work of Eve, Peabody, and the rest of the team they are on the trail of a killer who has no problem waiting years for revenge. As always this story has great characters, an intriguing mystery, and the humor and heart I've come to expect from the series. Always one of my favorites!

This is most likely my favourite couple’s story in fiction. 50+ books and Roarke and Dallas are goals.

Her last few books have been questionable as in didn't seem like she had written them herself. This was a pretty good book, better than the last ten or so, but still a far cry from when she first started writing the series. If you're a new reader to JD Robb, I suggest starting from the beginning as those books were fantastic.
