I skimmed the last 3rd - it was too long for the subject to my taste. That said, I can see it being ground breaking when published. Definitely entertaining and page turning. The real horror isn't the campires, it's the humans.

Great writing, love the characters, a genuinely scary book. Bit too long and some of the nasty bits felt unnecessary.

I first read this book as a teen, and it absolutely terrified me!  I was unable to go near any windows at night,  and I imagined vampires behind me all the time.  It had a deep impact,  and I've never really been okay with vampires - even sparkly ones - ever since.
This was a reread for my book group & I approached with trepidation.  But oh, the first half is very dull!  I kept wondering if it was even the same book!  The small town Americana goes on & on...I suppose to make the horror,  when it comes, worse.
I was still scared, and I mostly only read in daylight.  But in my head I had remembered this as an amazing story, when really quite a lot of it was a bit dull.
