One of my favorite fairy tales, beautifully told. I have read it at least twice before, but not for about ten years... I was pleased that the story still speaks to me the way it does.

A superior version of Naomi Novik's Uprooted/Spinning Silver books. Inspired by the classic fairytale of The Six Swans, this book had all of the charm and grittiness of old fairrytales. I was invested right away in Sorcha and her quest.
But I really think the story was too long. Way too wordy for the final outcome. If it was 100 pages shorter, I would have liked the story a lot more.
I also could not care for the romance. It felt super shallow.
Lastly, trigger warning for on-page SA. Was not expecting that and it really took me out of the book.

Juliet Marillier is clearly not afraid to put her characters through the wringer. In Daughter of the Forest, she tells a story with all the nostalgia and charm of an old fairytale. It also contains all the darkness and foreboding of an old fairytale. Sorcha, the protagonist, faces one heartbreaking obstacle after another as she tries to save her brothers from a witch's curse. The story has all the emotional pain of Robin Hobbs's Realm of the Elderlings combined with a premise reminiscent of Naomi Novik's folktale retellings, especially Spinning Silver. Meditating beautifully on the power of stories, this book is full of loveable characters, agonizing decisions, and courageous sacrifices. It makes for an encouraging start to a promising series, good for people who like nature, Ireland, fae, and fun sibling dynamics.

An absolutely beautiful story. A bit slow for me at times, but wonderfully written.

this is like a 3.5-4 star, I wouldn’t say this book really excelled in anything in particular and was a slog at times to get thru but it was for the most part consistently entertaining, I love a good curse in a story and enjoyed the Lady Oonagh whenever she was mentioned, it was open ended enough to make it clear for a sequel but still tied up what i wanted tied up. The fair folks’ dialogue tho was extremely corny and goofy n didn’t really reflect the mystique the author was going for in my opinion, I might read the second book if I ever go to prison
