Brilliant! It took me a while to get into this book as it was almost too tragic to cope with. After a brief break, I sunk back into the novel, allowing the author to take me on the journey with her words. Megan Gail Coles captures the emotional upheaval of the characters as they battle their way to understanding, resolution or any shred of comfort through yet another wicked Newfoundland winter. Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club left me reeling from the hurt caused by the racism, sexism, misogyny and manipulation rained down upon the marginalized of society. Highly recommended.

This is a tricky review for me. I started the book and it really drew me in. I found the writing style captivating and the characters complex. But then I got very sick for a few weeks and did not read. Afterward I kept picking it up and putting it down, struggling to get back into it. I found the second half of the book just really dragged. The story just kept circling around and around. And the ending was abrupt. Honestly I'm not sure what to think about this book but it was a journey to say the least.

Rather than finding the writing unique, powerful, poetic, or clever... I found it confusing. I wanted to escape these characters mostly because I wasn't getting to know them since the writing was obtuse (from an admittedly NOT deep reader).

I couldn't seem to get past the horrible feeling this book inspired in my body. It felt too close to the realities of life in a way that it inspired very real and familiar feelings that I prefer not to feel when reading.

I really wanted to like this book. For the first 30-50 pages I thought it was just the Newfoundland lingo I was having trouble understanding. And there are words and phrases i never did get. I understood some vague references cause I'm familiar with Newfoundland a little bit - though not St.John's. I should have made a chart to keep track of who the characters were. Some seemed to suddenly show up in the middle of book. As the book progressed the long-winded passages of poetic type phrases got longer, and seemed more like page fillers!
