I can't believe the library had this, and am horribly disappointed they don't have more by Andrew MacLean.

The art is freaking fantastic.

A great original new series. Interesting characters, good dialogue, compelling art, and a well-paced story. I'm excited to get on to volume 2.

Updated review: holds up and then some. Even better than the 5-star experience I remembered. The only criticism I can think to give is, sometimes the spreads have subject matter a little obscured by the dead space in the center created by the seam, which is probably exacerbated going from floppy issues to a bound graphic novel.

Great, great volume.

Full of decapitating fun. Really delightful art too.

It’s probably more of a me problem. But I did not like it all that much. The quest story felt pretty basic. The art is really the strongest part of this book; but I spent 50% of the time appreciating the art and the other 50% thinking ‘this is stupid. this new Saturday morning cartoon look is not for me.’ So again I didn’t like it but that’s probably mostly on me. I will say it is funny in places.

It's pretty and bright with an art style that falls somewhere between Adventure Time and Hellboy, but there wasn't much else to sink your teeth into. Granted, I don't think it wanted to be more than head chopping action, but it felt long and fairly one-note with barely any character or plot to invest in, and I generally need more than this offers. Apocalyptigirl did stylish adventure better and with much more heart, and I hate Fairyland does wanton violence with a lot more goofy fun, but I imagine anyone looking for a disposable action-fantasy romp will get enough enjoyment here.

Probably 3.5 stars? I like the tone, style and pacing. The story is very generic though, even if told in an interesting way. Would not mind to read more but not blown away.
