This book sees a large Bill Bryson and (an even more rotund friend from his teenage years) Steven Katz attempt to walk The Appalachian Trail, a hiking trail that runs from the South East to the North East of the United States, over a distance of 2500ish miles.

Bryson is a funny writer. This isn't exactly Shakespeare or Dickens, but it's funny, and informative, at the same time. He describes the experiences of two large, middle aged guys well in an amusing way, and gives you a potted history of the places he visits, and the people who tend to the trail, at the same time. If you like sardonic travel writing, you'll like this book.

After this book I wanted to hike.

A mostly deserted trail traveled mostly by two friends, you wouldn't think that would be interesting. But I have determined that Bill Bryson can make anything interesting. He does a great job conveying the stories he learned along the way, his experiences on the trail, and the history of the trail. He ties it all together in a fantastic way. A great book

After Chapter 9 I didn't know if they got back on the trail or not and it just became a book of facts. I wasn't as interested in the last half. :(
