Wow what a read. Although a hefty read at 600 pages I loved every page of this book and was with the characters through the ups and downs of the journey to uncover a secret kept in a love letter kept hidden for many years. The secret contained in the letter could shake the heart of the British establishment and it is one journalist’s interest sparked by the actions of an old lady which leads us on an unforgettable journey.
I loved the two female lead characters Zoe and Joanna and their entwined love lives and friendships which blossom as you turn the pages. I especially loved the relationship between Zoe and her grandad a famous actor who is central to the story as it weaves it’s way from family ties to friendship to love to trust to suspense to deceit.
What I loved about Riley’s writing is the likeable characters with a backstory which pulls you into their world and the well written plot which brought the story to life and made me think this could really be believable, I’m sure somewhere something like this has happened but with all things will we ever uncover the truth.
A great story line and although I read that this was written some 20 years ago only a few details in the book make you realise how things have changed but the story line itself is timeless. Go get a copy and read some more of Lucinda Riley’s books
5 stars for me

First of all I was stuck in this book for 3, yes 3, months. The premise is good, the idea is fabulous, the execution however was not to my liking. This book felt like it would never end. I managed to work out the ending as soon as the deed was done. At that point I was shocked to see there was still a fair amount of book to get through. But I stuck with it. I can see how some would love it. But it just wasn’t for me at all.

I really enjoyed this novel - I thought the subject matter, a scandal within the royal family that MI5 will kill to protect, intriguing and well executed.

I found the characters endearing and liked how the story from the present interlinked with the story from the past.

My only concern with this novel is that the subject matter related to real life people (King George VIII and Queen Elizabeth II) although they weren't directly named. I felt this was a little bit risque. I also made the mistake of reading the authors note before starting the story and that, unfortunately, gave away some of the story.

That said, the strength of the plot carried this enough to still get a solid 4 stars from me.

This is the second time I've read this novel, the first time under the title of The Love Letter.

This story is well paced and engaging and the characters are likable and well written.

Although this plot was a little risqué (as the author found out from the response to the first release of this novel) it was a good story and kept me reading to the last page.

4 stars from me.
