I Am Gotham

Tom King

The best parts of these quasi-reboot issues are when we get to see Batman's precision tactical decision-making - particularly the issue focused on how he attempts to manually steer a crashing commercial 747 plane away from major Gotham sites. Batman's willingness to die for his city is clear in this volume. What is unclear, and less enjoyable this early in the narrative, is why he's trusting and utilizing Thomas "Duke" and the two new super-powered heroes, Gotham and Gotham Girl in the ways he does. Between this title and whatever other Vol. 1 Batman title I've read from the Rebirth line, I've seen him utter the words, "I'm trying something new," over and over, in reference to Duke's role, but I have yet to make sense of it, other than guessing that he's training some kind of replacement, a la Jean-Paul Valley/Azreal.

It's been a while since I've read a Batman book and have decided to continue my slow crawl into the current Era. I loved Snyder's run and King has a lot to live up to. I like the concept of a Superman for Gotham, but I feel like Batman trusts Gotham and Gotham Girl too soon. Interested in reading more.

I love Alfred

Yo Soy Gotham.

Not the greatest of Batman stories by far. but what makes it wonderful, is the reduction of the entirety of Batman's purpose into one simple panel. That panel has such emotional weight.

There are technical issues, the setup, the pacing. it feels like some of the narration is left out, like poorly edited, left out. but it is very satisfying seeing someone distill so clearly the POINT of Batman.

Tom King is also the writer of that amazing Vision graphic novel I reviewed earlier. His work here on Batman is almost as good, which means it's great.
dark mysterious reflective fast-paced

Not a bad start. I've been meaning to jump into this run for a while, given how much people seemed to enjoy it. Coming off of Snyder's run was always going to be a tough act to follow, and I can see some of the growing pains here, but there's potential.
