A very enjoyable read, except for Wilfrid Robertson’s story, in which a couple of white hunters kill an elephant in Africa: ‘There was joy and pride in his heart, for two big and valuable tasks of his own shooting filled the back of the car.’ Yuck! But the other stories are delightful. My favourite was Cynthia Harnett’s ‘The Green Popinjay’ about a boy in 1454 seeking to buy a hood for his mother. Lovely.
