This first installment of The Bane Chronicles follows Magnus Bane, Catarina Loss, and Ragnor Fell on a series of comedic adventures in Peru. While it serves as a charming introduction to the series, it doesn't quite reach the heights of Cassandra Clare's other works featuring the Herondales or the iconic Malec duo. However, Magnus' flamboyant personality and witty banter with Ragnor make it a fun read nonetheless.

I’ve finally decided to dive back into the Shadowhunter world. My plan is to read it chronologically (even though I’ve all ready read The Infernal Devices trilogy). I didn’t mind this short story. It doesn’t have the best reviews, but I went in with the expectation that it is a short story just meant to show more background on the character of Magnus Bane; I quite enjoyed it. A story doesn’t always have to be majorly important to a plot for me to enjoy it; I am someone who enjoys stories that are simply character driven because I love knowing more about characters. I’m excited to continue in the Shadowhunter world and with learning about Magnus and other characters.

I rarely divulge into fantasy, but I'm in a short story mood as of late so I'm exploring.

I never thought the life of not exactly sure how many hundreds of years old warlock would be so sad. Brennan and Clare make sure you understand quickly, it's not just one thing that happened in Peru, but a series of memories recalled there that just hurt. Hurts covered up by adventure in the form of drunken debauchery. People who reject you, "I couldn't be with you... There's nothing permanent about you." People who don't support you or understand you. The book is good but maybe mis-named, instead of What Really Happened In Peru, maybe it should be what was remembered in Peru.

"Let the magic of the guinea pig flow through you."
I have had this giant book (I got the bundled collection) for some time now, but it wasn't until now, that I needed books for a challenge, that I decided to try out two of them. This is the first one, and it is about what Magnus Bane did in Peru, why he was banned (and that ending.. well... *snorts*). We see him through various times, various adventures, each time learning more about Magnus and his magic, about his friends, about love and lovers. About his past (which was very interesting, just as it was interesting to read about his friends and how warlocks are made). I laughed so so much while reading this one. The characters are brilliant. :)

I'm a fan of both Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan, but this e-book extra just falls a little flat. It's not very interesting, and it's frankly not very well written. The wording is just awkward and strange, and somehow the authors have managed to make Magnus Bane--one of the most interesting characters in The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices--seem boring and one-dimensional. Instead of a series of vignettes, I'd much rather have a cohesive book that one can read and understand.

I don't think I'll buy any of the other e-books as they come out ($2.99 each for 10 e-books or $9.99 for a paperback a year later--that's an easy decision). I was just really disappointed. I expected more from these authors.
