Jacko Vance, serial killer of teenage girls, has been banged up in prison since Book 2 (Wire in the Blood). He manages to use every ounce of his charm to inveigle his way into a position where he can take the place of a prisoner due to go on day release. He is not running away, at least not yet, he is determined to wreak a plan of revenge against all those who had a hand in his capture & punishment. DCI Carol Jordan is currently working her last case for Bradfield MIT, as the team is shortly due to be split up, & Jordan is heading for new pastures alongside Dr Tony Hill, criminal psychologist & profiler. Someone is killing sex workers & disposing of them in ever more disturbing ways.

I can only rate this one an average three stars out of five, as although the Vance plot should have added some sense of jeopardy, the book went on for too long. Tony was definitely off his game in this book, but Carol Jordan really really annoyed me. I know she suffered a huge loss in this book, but she was really unreasonable, no-one is infallible & Tony has never claimed to be. I'm a bit lukewarm about reading the next one after the ending to this one as Jordan is becoming an insufferable character. Where's the savvy strong woman from the first couple of books gone?
