I went to a college seminar where I got this book for free. This is not a college level book. It is perhaps a good introduction to feminism if you are much younger or have absolutely no knowledge about female historical figures. I could not get into this book because of its simplicity and the annoying narration by the Clintons.

It seems people either love the Clintons, or you hate the Clintons. If you're a fan, you'll love this book, featuring the Clintons' picks for gutsy women in several different categories. They inject their personal and political opinions into most of the stories, which is why I say that. Some of the women I'd never heard of so I was happy to read about them.

The one downside of the book is that there are so many women mentioned, sometimes the synopsis of a particular woman left me wanting more information. Maybe if they had edited the number of women down but wrote more lengthy studies it would have been better. But still, pretty good.

Bonus points for the Clinton women writing enthusiastically about Nancy Drew and Barbara Mertz's Amelia Peabody Emerson series.

So inspiring! So motivating! This should be required in history classes.

Allow yourself some time with this, as you'll want to let the lessons sink in. There were some women I knew a bit about (Sally Ride, Marie Curie), and was thrilled to learn more about their struggles, achievements, and fuller life stories. Others were completely new to me (Sophia Deleep Singh, Elizabeth Peratrovich,Wilma Mankiller--her name does not mean what you think it means). I appreciated the mix of historical and contemporary figures.

If you have daughters, get them a copy. We need all women to contribute their skills and talents to make our world a better place. If you need ideas on how to make this happen, read this book.

Positives. I enjoyed learning about the contributions of these important women. Unlike some other works on influential women I have read, I think this book presented a diverse mix of known/unknown and historical/contempory women from a wide range of backgrounds. I genuinely learned a lot.

Negatives. The writing style was alright but every entry is formatted the same which made reading tedious after a while. It is comparable to reading 400+ pages worth of Wikipedia articles.

There were also times that I didn't care for Hillary's and Chelsea's commentary which at times felt needlessly political. With this I mean that the information was obviously presented in a way that shows Hillary's political actions in a positive light or takes a shot at Republican politics. The obvious political motive was jarring at times.

Quote. "Everyone thinks women should be thrilled when we get crumbs, and I want women to have the cake, the icing, and the cherry on top, too." (Billy Jean King)

I heard of this book a while ago, but I hadn’t seriously considered reading it. Although I think Hillary and Chelsea Clinton are both “gutsy women,” I wasn’t convinced they could teach me anything new about the topic. However, with everything going on in the world right now, I wanted to read something positive, hopeful, and encouraging. This book is exactly what I was looking for. It was full of vignettes about amazing women who have made or are in the process of making our world a better place. I listened to the audiobook read by the authors, and I truly enjoyed hearing them tell me about more than a hundred “gutsy women” who they each find personally inspiring.
