I wasn’t that invested for over half of the book but the last section sold me. And I’m looking forward to continuing with the trilogy.

This is yet another book that has gotten me to tear up.

I loved this one!! I didn’t know what to expect because I hadn’t heard anyone talk about it, but this was a really interesting YA fantasy. It was really easy to catch onto the world, and the characters were just complex enough to make me love them! I really appreciated that this book didn’t sugarcoat the characters feelings and downplay their emotions over some really serious topics, but it also didn’t feel like it made them overly dramatic. There were some pretty messed up things that happened to these characters and the way they deal with it is honorable. I loved the little bits of romance as well, it wasn’t nearly enough to where I’d call this romantasy, but it just made me love the characters more.

I also really loved the dragons! I’ve been spoiled with books where dragons speak and are basically an entire other character, but the dragons in this book do not. With that being said, I absolutely loved their role and the relationships with their riders and the other people around them. The interactions written were really heart-warming, and I just loved all the little details about them. I’m really hoping to see more of the dragons and their actions & emotions in books 2 & 3!

I will also mention, there was a decent amount of fire injuries & burning mentioned. Nothing super graphic, but if someone has trauma with fire, I’d keep that in mind. It’s a book with dragons & there are sparring & matches that involve ash & fire.

I think this is the best book I’ve read this year. The characters are so well fleshed out, their struggles believable, the stakes believable and thorough. I am deeply impressed.

Excellent fantasy with complex political intrigue that didn’t fall into obvious good vs evil “sides”. The character development was excellent and I enjoyed both POVs. I liked that it wasn’t romance-heavy, especially in a world/situation with such high stakes. The dragons were an interesting element in this world too, and I hope the next books expand more on the dragon and rider relationship. The only thing that keeps it from 5 stars from me is that it definitely felt like a book that is meant to be a build up to the next books in the series. Even the big final scene in the book was a little short and anticlimactic after all the events that led it there. I’m excited to read the next one!
