“Together we’ll defy them, step by step through this fire, to the end.”

I will never be the same person I was before l read this. This book gave so much suspense (especially the last few chapters) that it got me hooked all throughout. I enjoyed the story a lot. I'm definitely a fan of the plot. The characters were so easy to get attached to, especially Annie my girl. The bond between dragons and their humans was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. This is a story about friendship, love, and defying the odds.

While I did enjoy this story, I was disappointed by two things. First, there's a clear lack of action - every time we approach an action scene (the trials and the final battle), we quickly cut to the other character's point of view. Second, there's a minor pacing problem. With an impending invasion looming, I expected more tension, more suspense, but the story continued at its slow pace. I half expected the trials to be cut short and more effort spent on preparing the fleet to spark.

Still though, I did enjoy the book and am eager to pick up the sequel.

I so loved this book. I love the plot the world building and the characters. I teared up a few times in this book. I think it is an excellent political fantasy.

My main disappointment with this book was the dragons. They have no individual personalities, they barely communicate, and they were more like casual side additions to this world than the main focus (which seems odd for a world where the ruling class rides dragons to keep people in line?). They seemed to only be present when convenient for the plot, and when not convenient, they were stowed in their caves (I think it was caves), not heard or seen.

Anyways, once I got over the lack of dragons in a dragon book, I started to enjoy the book. I loved Lee and Annie, and all the tension felt between them of their pasts and everything not said. I really wasn't sure what they would decide by the end, and I liked that they kept me guessing. The build-up of tension was good throughout the story, and while I think overall it has a slow pace, the climax at the end was a nice release of that tension with a lot of things happening at once.

There are some nice side characters too, though I'm hoping for some more development in the sequel. I'm interested to see where the story goes!
