This story left me underwhelmed, to be honest. I thought the idea had so much potential, but the execution was severly lacking for me. The writing felt full of cliches and too descriptive, but then also flat to me and the plot had so many tropes I don't care for. (28 May 2024)

while the storyline of this book was quick, it did not lack on plot or details. i didn't feel like the story was missing anything. it's such a cute romance story that touches on interracial relationships without being overly rooted in trauma

My Rating: 4.5/5 stars

I was so happy I found this book! Recently, I have been mentally struggling, so this was a welcome entertainment that brought me both joy and laughter, and a therapeutic outlet to cry.

With Ontario, Canada as its backdrop, the novel focuses on the serendipitous meeting of a Nigerian woman and a Spanish man. Their relationship begins as a casual encounter, but soon grows into something more significant, as the protagonist explores her independence and identity. Themes regarding love and romance are strongly present, but equally are those of more profound depth like multiculturalism, interracial relationships, immigrant identity, trauma, grief, toxic relationships, psychological abuse, motherhood, family, friendship, perspectivism, healing, and more.

Though the storyline offers a bevy of emotional themes lending themselves to the reconnaissance of human complexity, it is proportionately balanced with the lighthearted banter and humour expected in a romantic comedy. At times, its dialogue does borderline on the unnatural, but that is quickly made up for by the relatable pop culture references in romantic cinema and the breadth of meaningful topics covered.

Overall, this novel is outstanding. It is well written, has a clear voice, harmoniously combines the serious with the playful, and it also offers a beautiful message, which desperately needs to be shared not only among multinational and BIPOC women, but among people of all backgrounds and ethnicities, too.

I loved this book! A great, heartfelt book about the ties between a family obligation and following your own heart. A great message of letting go and allowing yourself to live to life’s fullest potential.

at first, I didn’t know what to expect from the story. and it was pissing me off, but in the end I ended up truly resonating with this book in someways. especially with parental expectations and conditional love on our end and what we believe even if her parents claim something different. I feel like it showcased the difficulties navigating not being completely connected to your culture in some ways, which is another thing I can relate to. this wasn’t a great love story I feel like it was a life lesson though. The love story in this book was real showed that people make mistakes and people don’t heal in the right way and we don’t have healthy habits sometimes and we have to fight for our happily ever after.

I was excited for this book so I'm high key disappointed. It's insta-love with miscommunication trope in end I just wasn't invested.
