This was not a bad read. It is not what I thought it was, though. I am not an animal lover, so the dog part of the story bugged me. Still, after reading Identical Strangers it was fun to compare it. I might recommend it to late elementary girls.

I opened this book expecting the typical twins reunite story and was so happily surprised! It is a great story about love, family, and finding home. I know that sounds corny, but this story is anything but corny. There's an adventure, a mystery, and a great mother-daughter relationship. After reading this story I'm even more certain that family members are those that make you feel loved and that doesn't always go hand in hand with people who are related to you.

Ages 9+

13-year-old Sunny has lived in more than a half-dozen foster homes in her life. Orphaned at three when her mother and grandmother were killed in a car crash, she was separated from her twin sister, Starr, and has always wondered what happened to her. A chance discovery of a bag filled with $820 in cash gives her the means to run away from Nebraska to their old hometown in Washington State.

It's a Pollyanna story where thirteen year old girls who are on the run and alone aren't pursued by Amber Alerts or raped at truck stops, but instead are helped along by kind strangers who make perfect grilled cheese sandwiches and agree to dog sit; a story where lying down under a tree during a tornado doesn't end in lightning strike and the worst human threat comes in the form of three kid-aged bullies who are scared off by a dog; a story where finding your long-lost sister is as easy as riding a bike up and down the streets of the town where you once lived together.

Then again, sometimes I've read too many teen novels that honestly reflect the real world, and they can be real bummers. This is the kind of happy escapism that middle grade girls lap up, and if their young suburban minds can't wrap around worse, well, we should feel lucky that they don't have to. Not just yet.

This was a good book. Hard to read sometimes because I felt the safety of the girl was in danger. When she met her sister it was heartbreaker. Cried at the end.
