Of all the JA novels I have read, this is my least favorite so far.  Perhaps I was in the wrong mood to read it—all the whores grated on me.  The book starts with a showdown, which I assumed was the title battle, and ends with a second showdown ten to fifteen years later, and the novel is alla bout the people who came and lived in that place—-and everything that happened afterward, which at the beginning we see people celebrating at a centennial type celebration, at the end the author tells us, was as nothing compared to the story told here of the first years.  The end does a wonderful job of tying the book together.
