The Characters of Christmas: 10 Unlikely People Caught Up in the Story of Jesus is a great way to begin the holiday season; more so than thoughts of gifts, gatherings, and lights, this story takes us back to the heart of the Christmas season and why we should be celebrating it.

The ten chapters are about Joseph (Jesus’s earthly father), Zachariah (John the Baptist’s father), Mary (Jesus’s mother), the angels, the innkeeper, the shepherds, the wise men, King Herod, Simeon and Anna, and Jesus’s family (his lineage). An eleventh chapter is also included to discuss a further four characters in Jesus’s genealogy that aren’t as remembered. Tamar, Rahab, Bathsheba, and Ruth are forgotten, exploited, powerless outsiders that specifically show us that God will take in anyone who truly believes and make them a new, better person.

I really enjoyed this book. It was incredibly informative on all the characters that were involved in Jesus’s birth in one way or another. I learned so much, the author did his research for sure, as there was more than a surface level knowledge. And for those people we really don’t know much about, ideas were brought forth based on information from that time period. I would recommend this book for all believers any time of the year!

A couple of things. I was born in raised in a Christian home and I've been a believer my whole life (I'm 30). I loved everything about this book. As far back as I can remember my family reads Luke 2 on Christmas morning but wow, this book completely flipped things for me.

You don't often think about the people surrounding the birth of Christ... the outlaying and prominent people.

The author is personable - this is not a "here are the facts and some details" - he is a storyteller and is so engaging. There are study questions at the end of each chapter AND the author recommends a Christmas song for each character (like come on! How cool is that?!)

I plan on buying copies for several family members.

The Characters of Christmas is a Christian religion book by author Daniel Darling. The author beautifully introduces the reader to characters found at the nativity scene of Jesus' birth, as well as some unlikely characters found in Jesus’ genealogy. Scripture verses are taken from throughout the New and Old testaments of the Bible.

Throughout the book, author Daniel Darling compares what the reader learns to present-day situations. He also suggests songs to go along with each chapter. This is a great book for the student of the Word because there are study questions and study reflections to help reiterate what was taught. This would also be a great book to read during Advent.
