This is a pretty silly book, but it's a sweet story of the pirate pig Julie who finds a home with those who love her unconditionally. But can she stay with her found family? What will happen when pirates hear about her special talent for sniffing out treasure?

4.5 stars.Pirates, pigs, treasures, oh my! So much fun!

This book was really cute and adorable. It was also really creative, in all my reading time I haven't read a story set in the time of the pirates with a pig(let) who can sniff out treasure. Yeah, you read that one right, this is a pig who will make people really rich.
Julie was really adorable, and it was fun seeing her grow, and also conquer her worst fear (something that was a bit hilarious considering what she did).

But, I also loved Sam and Pip. I was worried about them, I have read enough books to see that often characters will change when they encounter big piles of money. But oh no, not these two, if anything they care more about the money because they need food for Julie + food for themselves, than that they care about the treasure for real (in fact you should read the book to see what they actually do with the treasure most of the time). :)
They never changed, they were dedicated, and super sweet towards Julie. Many a person would have changed, or would have run away, but not these 2 and that made the book even better.

I also loved that we have a backstory on how Julie got to Sam and Pip, and what happened to her in her life.

And then we have the last thing I want to discuss, which is the art. My, oh my, I loved the art. It made the story come to life, and the characters matched how I saw them. That doesn't always happen. I have read books with illustrations were I was disagreeing with the illustrations (sometimes because they were really wrong, and you wonder why the illustrator didn't read the book or why no one checked anything, but sometimes also because my view was just different from the illustrator).
Not this book though. This book was great! And I had so much fun watching the characters doing what they did best.

I would recommend this book to everyone. Young and old will love this little book.

I read this when I was little and I remembered correctly that it was good!
The German audio book is narrated by Katharina Thalbach and features pirate-style music, a great combination.

I chose this book to read aloud to my 4yo as it is halfway between picture book and chapter book. It's quite short and simple. As a parent I find it a bit boring. Mr Four didn't care much either (though I thought he likes pirates). In hindsight I think it would be more suitable for little school kids who can start reading for themselves.

Absolutely delightful. I got this book because I like other things by the author and knew my pig-loving younger sister would like it. It probably only took fifteen minutes for me to read this, but it was a very pleasant fifteen minutes: most books at this reading level rely on dumb gags and potty humor to draw in young readers, but this is a unique, appealing story with good vocabulary words, great pictures, and the kind of excellence that draws in adults too. It's a rare event for me to read something aimed at second graders and think, "I wish I could write like this," but this is one of those books.

Other titles by Funke are much better.

An early reader for those just starting out on chapter books. It's a pig who can smell treasure in the water. Naturally, pirates have thrown the pig overboard for not being able to find treasure. Away from the pirates, so does smell treasure and the pirates find out and they want her back. It's a silly little story and the 3 year old nephew enjoyed it. This is a simple story and it has some fun elements like treasure and pirates. The kids enjoyed it more than I did.

Fun little story with characters I could follow for a while. I was expecting my son to ask me to skip over the Barracuda Bill parts, but he stayed with it. It's not that scary, I can never tell when a book might stress him out and he will want to skip parts.
