I liked the connection to the Aztec gods, but don’t expect this to be an origin story or have more than a tangential reference to Jessica Cruz’s role as a Green Lantern in the DC universe, because this isn’t a super hero story.

neoliberal values, ew. also every problem was resolved too quickly in an unsatisfying way that didn’t feel earned.

Jessica Cruz is a high school junior with lots of difficult decisions to make. She has to decide to renew her DACA status, something that will put a target on her back but might help keep her undocumented parents safe. She has to fill out college applications and hope her own undocumented status won’t jeopardize her goals. She helps her family around the house as much as she can, and she has landed a prestigious museum fellowship. All of this leaves little room for friends and hanging out. When her father is taken away by ICE agents, Jessica finds herself stuck between two warring Aztec gods - one says she should be a bridge for her family and friends and lean on them, the other tells her to take action against ICE and save her father by using her anger to fuel her.

This was a lovely story with beautiful illustrations and pretty much nothing to do with super heroes or Green Lantern stuff. It’s not bad, it just didn’t meet my expectations.

Poignant and timely, Rebirth isn’t your typical superhero story. Instead it focuses on the emotional complexities of teens and families currently living under wary pretenses; always watch your shoulder, they don’t care. Ive read stories of Latin citizens getting arrested by ICE for just being at the wrong place during a raid. It beautiful encompasses the familial dynamic, specifically that of togetherness and hope as each generation is always there to make sure your next step leads to success. There aren’t any superpowers or nothing of the sort, but just following Cruz’s journey here, especially with the lavish artwork, I couldn’t help but be enamored swiftly. And not because me being latino adds bias

Had a much better time with this than I do with most DC-not-really-superhero-"important-topic"-comics. Although, that might be because Jessica literally never gets a GL ring here. There's literally no superheroes. Why was this even a Jessica Cruz story. It could've been anyone.

Cute, art was pretty, loved the characters, plot was good. It showed me a different perspective.
I really enjoyed watching Jessica get sucked into this hatred and fear and anger in a completely destructive way, and then having to purposefully change herself and her actions so that she could redirect that energy in a way that actually does something. Felt powerful.

As someone who started getting into the green lanterns mythos during the new 52, and who REALLY got into them during DC Rebirth, and the Green Lanterns title, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz will always be my lanterns. There isn't any actual ringslinging in this one, but its still good! It tells a tale of Jessica Cruz as an undocumented teen who learns to channel her emotions into political work to help her family and her community. Very good stuff.

I liked the concept and the art. I would’ve liked to see some of the scenes/conversations more drawn out.
