I think somehow, despite how heartbreaking the last book was, that this book feels the most emotional for me. Temeraire and Laurence obviously both can't catch a break, and are being punished for their actions in the last book. We get more of Temeraire's POV in this installment. And it absolutely BREAKS my heart as he realizes how much Laurence has been impacted by what they did.
There's a ton of action here too, as Napoleon has invaded and is making big inroads. Temeraire and Laurence get a chance at redemption, but their success is still bittersweet.
Side note, Iskierki was super funny when she first hatched, but wow has she turned into an issue of a spitfire!
I think I'll take a little break before the last 4 books, but I am still enjoying this series to be clear!

Loved reading more of this story. I enjoyed seeing how Temeraire took action even if it is heartbreaking seeing the consequences of previous choices play out for the main characters.

A fun listen. Though the politicians and Lawerence's loyalty to the state could drive one mad.

I think that this might be my second favorite book in the series so far (after the first one of course) if only because we finally get sections from Temeraire’s POV. Getting to watch him grow into his leadership role while still fighting for the rights of the other dragons was just so fun, but I do wish that Novik had done more to make Temeraire’s sections more distinct from Laurence’s ( I mean, he’s a dragon, it shouldn’t feel like reading from the POV of a human, but it did). I’m also ambiguous about the ending because I don’t know enough about the Napoleonic Wars to know if the battle at the end is supposed to be the actual end of it or if there will be more in a later book. I suspect that we haven’t seen the last of Napoleon and Lien, even while I personally hope that we’re done with it and we’ll just get some nice dragon-y Australian adventures with Granby and Iskierka because I’m starting to get tired of all the fighting.
