Closer to 2.5. The book utilises a lot of cliches of the genre about the abusive mother and the selfish sibling. It was pleasant to see that the main character was a lot more balanced. Recognising the abuse of her mother, yet still trapped looking after her mother in the same house that she experienced so much abuse in Melody was a sympathetic character.

The story progressed well, the story following all the rules of the genre, but in the last 20% of the book the author decided to throw every conceivable twist towards the end, in the process, contradicting some of the narrative explained in earlier parts of the book. The 'edgy' factor, which I think the author was going for didn't work in my opinion.

The book doesn't tie the loose ends, but at the end, the evolution of the main character comes full circle and then decides to go back a few steps. It's a quick easy read and one could do worse than this book, but I felt disappointed.

From the first chapter, this book showed how dysfunctional Melody's family is. She isn't close to her sister but goes along with Laurel wanting her to date her boyfriend's brother. The boyfriend she can't stand. I thought about not finishing it but decided to skim through and find out if she finally broke free of the bonds that dragged her down or if she relished having them, trotting them out whenever it suited and could gain her sympathy. The ending was unexpected and left more questions than answers. I'm not sure I would read anything else by this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book right from the start, a fantastic read!
From the get go I was intrigued to find out how two sisters could go from being pleasant/friendly with each other (a strained sisterhood) to being in the woods waiting with a knife!!
Once I got to about half way through, that was it, it got creepy fast and I just had to know what happened next and what she was going to do. I read the last 200 pages in a matter of hours (and I consider myself a slow reader)!
This book is the definition of never truly knowing someone!
I have to say I was slightly disappointed with the ending, I expected it to leave us on a cliffhanger. With Sam plotting to kill Mel off as well or something to that effect!!
