Great graduation speech. Personal, yet relatable. The artwork is beautiful as well. I haven't read anything else by the author, but hope to.

“Success is not the result of making one good choice, of taking one step. Real success requires step, after step, after step, after step.”

Those words may sound so simple. But when you’re in the midst of trying to figure out the next step of your life’s roadmap after committing to and completing a higher education and someone close to you passes on without warning, you can’t see where you’re going...or if you’re actually moving. Just as Jesmyn, I moved in “a fog of grief.” Hit with tragedy after tragedy. Although I’m not exactly at the point that I passionately desire to be at yet, I managed to find my footing.

*2022 review below*

"Hold fast to your oars, hoist the sails to the wind, read the pictures in the stars, look beyond the horizon to that which you can't see but dimly sense in your future: the curving inlet, the sandy beach. Know that even those calm waters may harbor boulders, craggy rocks intent on rending the bottom of your boat. That when you land, you may find your legs too weak to walk well, still shaky from the sea, and that the soil may have its own perils, know that this is life. But also know that the fruit on the trees, sweet and warm to the mouth, is life as well."

I will always cherish Navigate Your Stars. Jesmyn's words deeply resonates with my spirit. It's familiar territory. I've been there time and time again. You can have the perfect vision for yourself, but life can take you down many tides, rocky roads, mountains, hurdles with weeks, months, years to get there. A whole spin cycle. To build persistence in the midst of failure and the death of loved ones. I actually don’t know how I managed to get out of that sinking hole while suffocating with everyone around just going about their day and never noticing I’m neck-deep and still slipping.

It’s something about that first step into persistence after enough being enough starts to resound in your feet, hands, bones, muscles, and mind. Take a step. Then another. Then another. Keep going. You can start to peak through that thick fog of grief as the nearing sunlight meets you with each step. Success is not a one-off. There's always more ahead. So I'm still climbing with discipline and consistency, passing different checkpoints along the way.
