This book had me on the edge of my seat! For the first time in a while I cried at a book and was genuinely cheering at every sweet moment. The characters were awesome and unbelievably sweet, especially the dads. I really liked how author explored the relationships with their parents, friends, etc. and it really added to the story.

I wish that Justin had some of his own friends in the book because it kinda seemed like he didn't since they were never mentioned. I also thought the beginning was kinda slow but the rest of the book had me gripping my heart with fear, sadness, and joy. Really good overall, but I won't be reading the next book (probably) because the Colton/Justin's dad situation is a little too weird for me too enjoy lol

Loved the study abroad elements in this story and thought it was a fun pairing that really complemented each other. Like all Tal Bauer I've read during my hyperfixation: sweet and heartfelt but with a gut-punch waiting for you!

Check CW for details on violence and homophobia.

Super sweet, mostly light-hearted read about a cowboy football player who falls in love on a trip to Paris. Wes and Justin are adorable, their love story is believable, and Wes in general is such a loveable and well-drawn character. The author also has a way of bringing Texan culture to life in a very loved way, rather than just focusing on the negatives (although it doesn’t shy away from the rampant homophobia either), but I could understand why they’d want to still live there despite that. I’ve never understood football culture at all, and the pressure they put students under is ridiculous. But the book also shows the good parts, and I found myself enjoying and cheering for a football team despite knowing nothing of the sport.

I only wish the ending hadn’t been quite so abrupt. I feel there was more to explore, and a couple loose threads that don’t get resolved (although I know there’s another book and they’ll be side characters in it, so hoping for more resolution then).

Finally, one small complaint about the homophobia piece -
Wes’ teammates act offended and shocked that he wouldn’t come out to them, EVEN AFTER he’s lying half beaten to death in a hospital bed because of homophobic “fans”. I found their lack of understanding fairly annoying, although I’m trying to give them the “privileged college kids who have never had to think of this before and are still learning” grace. But still. Minor quibble, but I feel like they could have been a BIT more understanding of where Wes was coming from.

Cannot recommend reading. TW:
it wasn’t a badly written book, but I’m tired of forced outing romances and it also had a horrific and violent hate crime perpetrated against the outed person that was not processed at all. also where did Wes’ job go? Or the credit card ballet debt?? Why did the teammates and coach act so terribly at first and then switcharoo to incredibly supportive after he nearly died from the hate crime?

I think Tal Bauer’s main goal in life is to see how often he can make me cry. An absolutely phenomenal read, HIGHLY recommend
